The cases stem from a May 12, 2025, law enforcement encounter on Sand Prairie Road North in the Town of Hixton. During the encounter, Edington fired at a vehicle driven by a minor following a pursuit. The minor was struck in the neck and suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury that resulted in permanent paralysis.
Edington was later charged with second-degree reckless injury in Jackson County Circuit Court 2025CF112. He is presumed innocent of the criminal charge unless and until proven guilty in court. As of June 22, 2026, the attorneys and Stan Edington appeared remotely, and the case is set for a four-day jury trial in 2027.
The minor, identified in federal court records as B.B., later filed a civil rights lawsuit against Edington, Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera in his official capacity, and Jackson County. The lawsuit alleges excessive force, constitutional violations, failures involving training and supervision, and related Wisconsin state-law claims.
Edington, Waldera, and Jackson County deny liability, deny violating the plaintiff’s constitutional rights, and have requested dismissal of the federal lawsuit.
